Firebird is now registered for use in wheat or barley planted by the 31st July at an application rate of between 300 – 500 ml/ha. As expected the new higher rate lifts the level of weed control for a number of weed species. Bayer anticipates that a higher dose rate of Firebird, in the 400 – 500 ml/ha range, will be used when challenging weeds such as Vulpia hairgrass are present or when the weed burden in the paddock is high. This was illustrated last season in the Lower North Island when Firebird, applied at 500 ml/ha in a Bayer trial targeting annual poa, delivered a 1 tonne/ha increase in wheat yield.
