With the registration of SIVANTO prime in autumn 2025 New Zealand’s destructive establishment pests of both forage brassicas and fodder beet will find life has just got a whole lot harder. In fact, from spring 2025, they will find there is no escape.
SIVANTO prime – now there’s no escape for destructive establishment pests in forage crops

SIVANTO prime controls all key establishment pests

SIVANTO prime provides very effective and rapid control of Nysius (wheat bug), springtails and green peach aphid.

Ask the Bayer team what pests they are asked about the most and it is likely to be springtails on the North Island and Nysius on the South Island. Fortunately, SIVANTO prime provides excellent control of both.

But ask any agronomist with experience of growing beet in the UK and they will tell you not to overlook aphids. Aphids transmit viruses in both crops. While the symptoms are most obvious with Beet Yellows Virus in fodder beet, viruses can lead to severely stunted, deformed crops and serious crop yield losses in both fodder beet and forage brassicas. Don’t be fooled into thinking this is just a UK problem, viruses have been infecting New Zealand fodder crops for many years.

So, it’s great news that SIVANTO prime very effectively controls green peach aphid, the primary aphid species responsible for virus transmission in fodder crops.

SIVANTO prime controls the target pests in several ways

Pests receiving direct contact are controlled, as are pests walking across treated soil or plant surfaces (indirect control) and pests ingesting SIVANTO prime via feeding.

Added to this SIVANTO prime moves systemically within the plant, both upwards and outwards (to leaf tips), to protect new growth. Finally, but very importantly, SIVANTO prime exhibits very effective two-way translaminar movement. SIVANTO prime landing on the top of the leaf will move to the underside of the leaf, and product landing on the underside of the leaf will move to the leaf surface.

Coupled with observations that SIVANTO prime can provide 7-10 days effective control, there’s no escape for the forage growers most destructive pests.

SIVANTO prime is a very convenient, operator friendly formulation to use

It is formulated as an innovative, liquid, soluble concentrate (SL) formulation that is easily handled, odourless and which instantly dissolves in water to give a clear solution.

It is applied at a low dose rate, using water volumes that allow efficient work rates whether using ground application or a helicopter. SIVANTO prime penetrates the plant very effectively which means it acts rapidly and doesn’t need adjuvants.

Another benefit of the SL formulation is that Sivanto prime is widely compatible with other crop protection products that are also being applied. Used alone Sivanto prime does not require an adjuvant but if it is mixed with products that recommended the use of an adjuvant, then the adjuvant should continue to be used.

SIVANTO prime gets to work quickly

Rapid control is very important. The sooner insects stop feeding, the less damage occurs, and this is especially important for virus control. Aphids spread viruses by feeding on different plants and it is this that results in viruses spreading. Control aphids quickly and virus infection is significantly reduced.

SIVANTO prime is a group 4D insecticide

SIVANTO prime is the sole member of a new insecticide subgroup for New Zealand (group 4D). Whilst sharing a mode of action with other group 4 insecticides, that is where the similarity ends, as SIVANTO prime has its own pest spectrum and is not cross resistant to other group 4 insecticides. With insecticide resistance a concern of many in the industry, having a new insecticide to choose from is very helpful.

SIVANTO prime can be integrated into IPM programmes. With little impact on the commonly encountered beneficial insects of forage crops in New Zealand (ladybirds, hoverflies, lacewings and parasitoid wasps) SIVANTO prime fits well into an IPM approach when used according to label instructions.

And as long as good agricultural practice is followed, with care taken to avoid actively foraging bees, SIVANTO prime poses no threat to honeybees.

The Bayer team is proud to have developed, registered and made available SIVANTO prime to New Zealand farmers. Bayer is committed to supporting farmers in New Zealand and the fact it is made in Australia completes the picture. To learn more about SIVANTO prime talk to your local Bayer representative.
