New Zealand dairy farmers are enjoying great returns at the moment and so quality feed is in demand.

Fodder beet offers an attractive forage option for dairy farms, delivering high yields of quality, energy rich feed. It helps keep cows in good condition and compared to some types of forage brassicas it can reduce the risk of nitrate leaching and methane emissions.

However, growing fodder beet is not without its challenges, not least maintaining effective weed control.

Early weed control is essential for a successful fodder beet crop

Fodder beet grows slowly after planting and takes several weeks to develop enough leaf canopy to suppress weeds. Therefore, effective weed control is very important during crop establishment, from emergence to the 8 leaf stage.

Controlling broad leaved weeds in young fodder beet crops can be challenging. Not only are you trying to control broad leaved weeds in a broad leaf crop but to complicate matters young fodder beet plants can be sensitive to herbicides. Just at the time when any check to growth will delay the crop reaching canopy closure and effective weed competition.

CONVISO SMART has revolutionized fodder beet growing

The CONVISO SMART fodder beet system is a breakthrough in growing fodder beet. It has significantly simplified weed control for sugar and fodder beet.

The CONVISO SMART system comprises two elements: CONVISO SMART sugar and fodder beet cultivars bred and marketed by KWS and CONVISO ONE, a broad-spectrum herbicide specifically developed by Bayer. CONVISO ONE is only available as part of the CONVISO SMART system from KWS.

CONVISO ONE herbicide

The launch of CONVISO ONE, an element of the CONVISO ONE beet growing system in spring 2024.

CONVISO ONE is a broad spectrum, broad leaf and grassweed herbicide which is revolutionizing beet growing through a combination of highly effective, broad spectrum, post-emergence weed control and simple, over-the-top application.

As well as controlling many common troublesome weeds such as fat hen and black nightshade, CONVISO ONE also controls difficult weeds such as mallow, docks, annual ryegrass and annual poa.

Two applications of CONVISO ONE plus Partner (adjuvant) applied post-emergence of the fodder beet crop with a 10-14 day interval will provide very high levels of weed control.

The first application is applied when the indicator weed (normally fathen) reaches 2-4 true leaves which ensures weed competition is removed early in the life of the beet crop.

Broad leaf weeds including three Fat Hen plants, at the correct growth stage for CONVISO ONE. Fat Hen is very common and so is a useful indicator weed.

Importantly CONVISO SMART cultivars are not genetically modified. They were bred using classic breeding methods to be tolerant of the CONVISO ONE herbicide.

Benefits of using CONVISO ONE

  • A simple programme of two applications of CONVISO ONE controls a broad weed spectrum including ryegrass and broadleaf weeds such as mallow in CONVISO SMART sugar beet and fodder beet cultivars
  • CONVISO ONE offers a convenient approach to weed control in CONVISO SMART sugar and fodder beet cultivars with two applications applied 10-14 days apart providing excellent weed control
  • CONVISO ONE exhibits excellent crop safety and can be applied from the two true leaves of the crop
  • Applying CONVISO ONE in the early stages of crop establishment removes weeds before they can significantly compete with the crop
  • The low application rate of CONVISO ONE minimises packaging

Resistance management

CONVISO ONE contains foramsulfuron and thiencarbazone-methyl which are Group 2 ALS herbicides. As resistance to these herbicides could develop it is important to take steps to reduce this possibility.

  • CONVISO ONE, or any other ALS herbicide, should not be applied alone i.e. without a partner herbicide with a different mode of action, more than three times in three successive years. The two applications of CONVISO ONE can be treated as one application
  • Integrate Nortron and either Betanal Forte or Betanal quattro into the programme either in mixture with CONVISO ONE or prior to or after the application of CONVISO ONE
  • Do not apply less than the recommended dose and adhere to the recommended spray interval of 10-14 days after the first application. This approached has been shown to provide a high level of weed control under NZ conditions
  • Adopt sound agronomic practices to ensure a competitive crop
Bayer Conviso Nortron Betanal Graphic

Adopting a strong resistance management programme is important to maintain the long-term effectiveness of CONVISO ONE. Prior to applying CONVISO ONE apply Nortron pre-emergence and then when weeds reach the correct growth stage add Betanal Forte or Betanal quattro to one of the two applications of CONVISO ONE.

Field experience in 2024/25

The 2024/25 season saw the Bayer field team out of farm alongside KWS and our merchant partners advising on the use of CONVISO ONE and monitoring the weed control achieved.

It is fair to say that we saw some spectacular results with awesome weed control being achieved.

Take a look at a few images and judge for yourself.
